Spirit Horses review

Here's a new review and I'm going to let it speak for itself. It's one of the best books I've read in quite a while. It's due for release on April 1, 2009.

SPIRIT HORSES, Alan S. Evans, Oceanview, $25.95, 304 pages, ISBN: 9781933515250, reviewed by Barry Hunter.

In my many years of reading, I can count on one hand the number of books that have left me with tears in my eyes. This one goes on that list and I still have fingers left. It is a truly touching first novel of tradition, loss, and destiny. It’s a story that appeals to the heart as well as the soul and I’m sure it will touch you as well.

Shane Carson is a gifted horse trainer living on his farm in Tennessee with his wife and two children when a woman drops off a horse and asks him to find it a good home. It turns out the horse is a mustang that belongs to a herd in Wyoming that roams on the Shoshone reservation. The herd is know as SPIRIT HORSES as the Shoshone believe that the horse carry the dead into the afterlife.

After a tragic accident, Shane spends time in a drunken haze until reminded of a promise he made to his son to return the mustang to her herd and set her free. While in Wyoming, he makes friends with Tigee, the head of the tribe and Tara, his grand-daughter. He also makes a few enemies as he offends some of the residents with his friendship of the Shoshone. He also helps Tommy by sharing his knowledge of horses and their training.

Shane becomes involved in helping the Shoshone to discover the danger that is threatening the horses, the tribe and his plan to set the mustang free. This is a well written, well thought out novel. The characters are fully developed and you care about what happens to them.

Cheers to Alan S. Evans for writing a wonderful novel. Credit must also be given to Oceanview for their support of interesting and out of the ordinary novels. Give yourself a treat and get this tender, touching novel.
