Myth-Interpretations and Fangs for the Mammaries reviews

MYTH-INTERPRETATIONS, Robert Asprin, Baen, $14, 300 pages, ISBN: 9781439133903, reviewed by Barry Hunter.

1978 was the year that Asprin captivated me and a lot of other folks with his hilarious introduction to Skeve and Aahz, the heroes of the MYTH books. It has always been a fun ride and this volume fills in the gaps with some of their shorter appearances. It was a sad day when he left us, but I hope that in some way his talented collaborator, Jody Lynn Nye, can come up with more adventures.

Also included in this volume is the basis for his novel THE COLD CASH WAR, “Con Job” – his last story, and several other examples of his work. This is a book of treasures from a gifted writer. The cover is by Bob Eggleton and shows a dragon sitting on an egg; I truly hope something hatches.

FANGS FOR TH MAMMARIES, Esther Friesner, Baen, $7.99, 422 pages, ISBN: 9781439133927, reviewed by Barry Hunter.

While we wait for the next volume of Friesner’s highly entertaining Chicks series (CHICKS AHOY!), she has gone into the vast landscape, known as Suburbia to present us with a new set of mammaries, I mean, memories to hold us over until that time.

Joining Esther this time around are Jody Lynn Nye, Sarah A. Hoyt, K.D. Wentworth, Laura J. Underwood, Kevin Andrew Murphy and others letting us know how the vampires have adjusted to modern day living.

Jody Lynn Nye’s “Overbite” opens the volume with a trip to the orthodontist. “If Music Be the Food of Love…” David Freer shows us how teenage daughters can be a pain to fathers, even if they are vampires. A group of “Night” students go on a field trip in “Miss White-Hands’s Class Goes Shopping” by K. K. Wentworth. Other stories involve a beauty queen, circus performers, and other assorted characters.

Esther Freisner has a talent for bringing out the best in her contributors and this is no exception. Her entry into this collection says it all, this anthology is “Long in the Tooth”.
